Nigerian Islamic militant leader Abubakar Shekau says in a new
video that he commanded the 23 October battle in a provincial capital that
killed at least 127 people.
All but two were combatants killed during five hours of fighting
in Yobe state capital, Damaturu. It was the first major attack on an urban
center in months in Nigeria's northeastern Islamic uprising.
The video, obtained on Monday, shows Shekau in military camouflage
holding an AK-47 automatic rifle as well as hundreds of guns which Shekau
claims were captured in Damaturu.
He accuses the military of lying about its casualties in fighting
during which militants set ablaze four police command posts and an army
barracks.
Nigeria's military says it killed 95 insurgents for the loss of 22
soldiers and eight police officers.
