Ghana's
Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) has seized 400 kg of substance suspected to be
cocaine on a fishing vessel in the western waters of the country.
The substance
discovered in the Guyanese fishing vessel MV ATIYAH Georgetown has a street
value of 50 million U.S. dollars, according to a press release obtained here
Thursday from Chairman of NACOB Bafiour Assassie-Gyimah.
Arrests were
made on November 19 with support from Ghana Navy (Western Naval Command), Ghana
Air Force and Ghana's foreign partners .
"NACOB
recognizes that the anti-narcotic crusade is a shared responsibility. In this
regard, the vessel had been monitored on the high seas, and when she got into
Ghanaian waters the Navy and NACOB officers arrested and escorted her to the
Sekondi Naval base. " the release explained.
At the
headquarters of NACOB, Xinhua's staff on early Thursday saw heavy security
presence, as the suspects, five crew members including a Ghanaian resident in
Brazil, were said to be under interrogation.
